Waacking is a street dance stemming from the style punking developed in the LGBTQ+ clubs of Los Angeles during the disco and funk era of the 1970s. The dance is characterized by fast, rotating arm movements, expressive posing, and plenty of attitude.
For Mounia Nassangar, waacking serves as both a protest against homophobia and racism and a key to liberation. In ‘S.T.U.C.K,’ she explores how one can accept the limitations of the body—and life—using dance as a tool to overcome challenges and the feeling of being trapped.
The French talent has previously appeared as a dancer in the music video for the song ‘Modern Jam’ by the American rapper Travis Scott and in designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s musical ‘Fashion Freak Show.’ In 2023, Mounia Nassangar started her own dance company, cie.nassanger, and was recognized as the ‘Talent of Tomorrow’ by the progressive French magazine Konbini in 2024.
‘S.T.U.C.K’ will premiere at the (Under)ground Festival on 19 June and will be presented at Platform in collaboration with Detour Dance Festival.
